Walk-in Registration Day is two weeks away! It is scheduled for July 23 from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Indian Hill. If you are a returning family, you can register online for the 2019-2020 school year. All returning families must still register your child(ren) for the new school year. It is important to register in a timely manner so we can plan for staffing and busing for the 2019-2020 School Year. Parents/Guardians who have more than one student in the district will need to register each child individually. However, our student management system (School Insight) will store all previously submitted data that is shared (i.e. contacts, address, etc.). It is strongly recommended that a computer or tablet with a full keyboard is used when registering. If you have any questions or are in need of technical support, please email Caitlin Smith at casmith@palos128.org. All new families need to prove residency in person. Please click here to find detailed information on the registration and residency process: https://www.palos128.org/o/district/browse/30192. New families can also begin the online registration process prior to July 23 by clicking here: https://www.schoolinsight.com/NewFamilyRegistration.aspx?refid=01989a0b-8fb6-4035-b074-50d65aa56659.

Due to transportation factors we have proposed to the BOE moving up our districts start and end times by 15 minutes starting next school year. One of the biggest issues this year was late buses due to sub or new drivers. The reason why we tend to get a lot of sub/new drivers is that because of our school times, the drivers cannot do another route after taking our children home. This means less money for the driver. As soon as there is an opening for a route that is longer, our drivers put in for that. This means for us, sub/new drivers who do not start on time, who do not know the routes, and who do not know the children. All of this is bad for our children and our families. We want the highest quality of driver with our children and consistent pick up and drop off times. In addition, since our drivers cannot do additional routes, the costs of running our buses is set to increase 28% over the next three year contract. If we move to times that allow drivers to take additional routes, those costs increase 14% over the next three year contract instead. By moving our day up 15 minutes our drivers can do another school's route after ours. This means drivers can earn more and will hopefully equate to better consistency and quality of drivers for our buses. So, next year your child's day would change by 15 minutes. It won't get any longer or shorter, but the start and end times will be moved up. We hope that by getting this information out as soon as possible it will allow you time to start preparing for August of 2019. We realize our working families may have some adjustments to make with childcare, etc. Feel free to send me an email if you have questions or concerns. We understand that these earlier times may affect those before school activities that take place. The times below reflect the new start and end times proposed for 2019-2020 school year. INDIAN HILL (this includes preschool) students 8:45-2:45 staff 8:00 -3:00 PLC students out 1:15 CHIPPEWA students 8:15- 2:50 staff - 8:00 -3:00 PLC 1:15 NAVAJO students 8:00 - 2:35 staff 7:45 - 2:45 PLC 1:15 INDEPENDENCE students - 7:55 - 2:43 staff - 7:45 - 2:45 PLC - 1:15

D#128 families – As we prepare to go into a very COLD tomorrow and next week, I want to share some ideas related to school and cold weather. • If your child rides the bus, be prepared for the possibility of the bus not being on time. We are in constant communication with the bus company about this issue especially when there is a sub driver. We know it happens sometimes, and will continue to problem solve around this issue. • Some bus stop ideas from other parents when it is really cold: o Possibly checking with neighbors that you know and are comfortable with, near the bus stop, about children waiting inside a house or garage. o Possibly checking with others that you know and are comfortable with, about parents and vehicles that may be able to stay at the bus stop and allow children to sit inside until the bus arrives. • Call your child’s school if the bus is more than 15 minutes late. • Make sure your child is dressed appropriately for cold temperatures, including boots, gloves, and hat if you have those items. • If having appropriate outerwear is a financial hardship for your family, please contact your child’s school. • If it is possible for you to take your child to /from school, please do so. • We understand that figuring out childcare can be difficult for many of our parents, but if you have the opportunity, we encourage you to plan alternatives in the event that we must close. • We do not take the decision to close schools lightly, and will only do so after verifying sustained temperatures, including wind chills, and conversations with other districts. • Any school cancellations will be notified via text, Facebook, live feed on our website, and Twitter. • While we want your children in attendance if we are open, the decision to send your child to school or not is ultimately up to you under these circumstances.

We were notified by police this morning that an unknown older couple offered to give some students a ride home after Navajo band yesterday at 3:30. This occurred around Oak Park Avenue and 123rd St. The driver of the vehicle indicated to the students that he was a retired police officer. Parents notified the Palos Heights police. While we have no direct knowledge of malicious intent at this time, we felt it appropriate to keep parents informed as there will be an increased police presence after school today in this area.
